How to buy UAS payloads and gimbals
A payload is bought for the product it produces, not the sensor it carries. Specify the deliverable and the export classification, and the shortlist writes itself.
This category covers the sensors an uncrewed aircraft carries and the gimbals that point them: electro-optical and infrared turrets, mapping cameras, lidar, multispectral and hyperspectral sensors, and radiation or gas detectors. The aircraft is elsewhere, and so is the autonomy that flies it. The mistake to avoid here is buying a sensor specification instead of the output you need.
Specify the deliverable first
Decide what the customer of the data actually requires: ground sample distance at altitude, absolute or relative accuracy, point density, spectral bands, or the ability to identify a specified object at a specified range. Then ask the supplier to demonstrate that on your aircraft, at your altitude, in your light and weather. Ask what the geolocation accuracy is with and without ground control, and what post-processing is required to reach the claimed figure. Ask what the stabilisation performance is in the wind you fly in, expressed as residual motion, not as a marketing adjective. Ask what the data rate is, how it is stored, and what the workflow to a finished product looks like in hours of human work.
Weight, power and the aircraft it flies on
Ask for the installed mass including the mount, cabling and any additional battery. Ask for the power draw and whether it is within the aircraft's payload bus. Ask what the endurance penalty is on your exact airframe, measured rather than estimated. Ask how the payload is mounted, whether a swap is field-doable, and what calibration a swap requires. Ask about environmental qualification: temperature range, moisture, vibration and shock, and whether the unit has survived a hard landing in the field. Where the payload flies under Part 107, remember the operating rules attach to the operation, so confirm the combined aircraft and payload configuration still fits the approvals you hold.3
Export classification is a shortlisting criterion here
Sensor payloads sit near a line that runs through this market. Fire control, laser, imaging and guidance equipment is enumerated on the munitions list, including electro-optical tracking, laser spot trackers and imaging systems tied to specified characteristics, together with the technical data connected to those articles.1 Items not captured there may still be controlled under the export regulations administered by the Bureau of Industry and Security, which publishes classification guidance, country guidance and the Consolidated Screening List.2 Ask the supplier for the classification of the exact configuration, the basis for it, and what licences a foreign deployment or a foreign national's access would need. For defence work, check the standards called out on the requirement in the government's standardization register, where each document shows a status and dates.4
Questions that sort suppliers
Ask for sample output from your aircraft type and mission profile, not a brochure image. Ask for the accuracy figures with the processing chain that produced them. Ask for the export classification in writing. Ask what calibration the unit needs, how often, and who does it.
